Mission
The Curtis R. Harley Art Gallery offers a broad range of cultural, conceptual and technical exhibitions in the visual arts while supporting the mission of the University. The Gallery is a teaching model to educate students about ideas and information that may different from their previous experiences.
Gallery activities include artist lectures, workshops and demonstrations, written documentation in support of exhibitions, scholarly research, visual art performances, art educator visits and field research. Gallery activities cultivate an understanding of art as a discipline, the relationship of art to life and the historical and societal role art plays for the educated individual.
Each year the Gallery showcases the work of graduating seniors in the Visual Arts program and gives them an opportunity to present undergraduate research in a public setting. The Gallery includes opportunities for students to assist in the operational features of the gallery as a hands-on educational experience while gaining applied training.
The Curtis R. Harley Art Gallery is located on the first floor lobby of the Humanities and Performing Arts Center (HPAC) and showcases nationally and internationally established artists and exhibitions that support the academic mission of USC Upstate. Sponsored by the Visual Arts program and supported by the Office of Student Affairs, the Gallery schedules six or more exhibitions during the academic year. The exhibitions are accompanied by lectures, symposia, workshops and field research. Receptions honoring visiting artists and speakers are held for scheduled Gallery events, which are free and open to the public.

Permanent Collection
USC Upstate has a growing permanent collection of contemporary and historical works with an emphasis on the 20th Century. Located on campus grounds is the University’s collection of monumental sculpture that showcases contemporary southeastern sculptors such as Jim Galluchi, Dan Milspaugh and Hanna Jubran. Visitors to the USC Upstate campus may view the sculpture collection throughout the year. Also included in the University’s collection are photographs by Jerry Uelsmann, paintings by Jeff Russell, paintings and works on paper by Beatrice Riese, and over 150 original photographs by Andy Warhol.
Curtis R. Harley Art Gallery Scholarship
The scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time art major who meets the following criteria:
- a graduate of a public Spartanburg County secondary school;
- currently enrolled in art courses;
- has earned at least 30 credit hours and a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.

Year-round Outdoor Sculpture
Located on the University grounds.Permanent Collection available year-round. Includes self-guided tour information via the Guide by Cell program. This exhibition is a collaborative effort with Converse College and Wofford College to recognize 40 years of service and art by Mayo Mac Boggs.
