USC Upstate Welcomes
New School of Education Dean
The University of South Carolina Upstate announces the appointment of Dr. B. Lee Hurren as dean of the School of Education. He begins his duties on July 1, 2013.
Hurren comes to USC Upstate from the University of North Alabama where he has served as chair of the Department of Secondary Education and as a professor of secondary education since 2007. From 2003-2007 he served as an associate professor of education.
“Dr. Hurren brings a wealth of experience and knowledge that will certainly be of great benefit to this University,” said Dr. Charley Harrington, senior vice chancellor for academic affairs. “His experience in the classroom, faculty development background, community engagement involvement, and his leadership skills make him the perfect candidate to lead the School of Education.”
Hurren earned his Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and M.Ed. in Secondary Education from the University of Nevada, Reno. He earned his BA in Foreign Languages and Literature (emphasis in Spanish) from Southern Utah University. Hurren taught middle school Spanish, math, and reading for three years; and secondary Spanish and ESL for eight years in Reno, Nevada, where he also coached track and cross-country for 11 years. At Francis Marion University, Hurren was assistant professor of education and director of student teaching and clinical experiences.
“My family and I are very excited to live, teach, learn, and serve in Upstate, South Carolina. I look forward to working with the outstanding faculty, students, and staff at USC Upstate, as well as working with local schools, professional organizations, and community members,” said Hurren. “Together we have great opportunities to build upon our strengths, as well as develop new areas of expertise and distinction. The challenging and exciting field of education provides endless opportunities for those who wish to make a positive difference in the lives of our children and youth, and I feel privileged to be a part of that.”
Hurren is a former stand-up comic and winner of the Doritos/Certs Comedy competition. He and his wife, Susan, have five children (Elizabeth, Troy, Byron, Daniel, and Emma).
