The University of South Carolina Upstate is a comprehensive public university and a senior institution of the University of South Carolina. Positions listed are either tenure-track or non-tenure-track (Instructor) on a nine month basis unless specified otherwise. Candidates must have earned doctorates or other degrees as specified. ABD candidates with planned completion dates before August 15th may also be considered. Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and advising, as well as a record of scholarship and service. Instructors are hired on a nine month contractual basis subject to annual renewal. They will have responsibilities equivalent to five teaching units and must have at least a master's degree with 18 hours in the discipline and other qualifications as noted. All positions are subject to funding.

Department of Fine Arts and Communication Studies

 

Tenure-track Assistant Professor of Commercial Music
beginning August 16, 2016

Tenure-track, nine-month faculty position to teach on the Spartanburg and/or Greenville campus.

The successful candidate will teach a variety of courses based on the area of specialization and departmental needs, chosen in consultation with the program coordinator and department chair. The area of specialty is open, but scholars and performers working in the areas of popular musicology, jazz studies or commercial music are especially encouraged to apply. Although the focus of USC Upstate's music program is commercial music, we offer courses in jazz studies and Western Art music. We offer a B.A. in Commercial Music, a Minor in Commercial Music and a Minor in Jazz Studies. Based on the hire's interests and experience, the teaching load may include directing one or more ensembles. The hire will have the option to teach applied lessons (voice, guitar, bass, or piano/keyboards are preferred), but lessons on other instruments would be possible. The ability to teach courses in music business and technology as well as the ability to lead ensembles would be seen as beneficial.

Required: Doctorate in music or ABD (if completed before August 15, 2016) in music. Experience teaching music courses at the college or university level.  

Preferred: Proven record of creative and/or scholarly activity related to commercial music. Experience teaching courses related to commercial music at the college or university level.

Tenure-track Assistant Professor of Communication Studies beginning August 16, 2016

Tenure-track, nine-month faculty position to teach on the Spartanburg and/or Greenville campus.

The Department of Fine Arts and Communication Studies seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor with a background in Critical Cultural Studies to teach in the Speech Communication program. The candidate will be able to teach some combination of the following courses: Ethics In Human Communication, Rhetorical Theory and Criticism, Communication for Social Change, Performance Studies, Communication and Gender, Argumentation and Debate, Research Methods, Special Topics and other classes in his/her area of expertise. The ideal candidate will have expertise in one or more of the following areas; performance studies or media studies. Additionally, the preferred candidate will also be able to teach Rhetoric at the undergraduate level. They will contribute significantly to the curriculum by developing classes based on his/her area of expertise. The candidate will maintain an active research agenda in his/her area of expertise as well as advise students and serve on University committees. A demonstrated commitment to student-centered learning and evidence of excellence in teaching is required.

Required: Ph.D. in Communication Studies or related field, with a background in Critical Cultural Studies; ABD considered if degree completed before August 15, 2016. A demonstrated commitment to student-centered learning and evidence of excellence in teaching is required. 

Preferred: Three years of teaching experience at the university level; ability to teach Rhetoric at the undergraduate level.

Responsibilities include teaching Abnormal Psychology and upper-level topics courses in the applicant's area of interest; ideal applicants will also teach Introduction to Psychology and Research Methods.  Applicants must show a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and advising, and the ability to maintain an active research program that involves undergraduates. Other duties include service in support of the department and the university. 

Required: A PhD from an APA-accredited clinical psychology program. Successful background check is required.  

Preferred: Completion of an APA-accredited internship, eligibility for licensure.

Candidates will be expected to teach upper-level courses in American Institutions; preference will be given to those who specialize in Judicial Politics. The ability to teach Introduction to Political Theory and American National Government is also required. Candidates whose research and teaching interests complement existing department strengths are especially welcome. Excellence in teaching and scholarship and a commitment to service is expected. Faculty typically teach four classes per semester: two sections of American National Government and two upper-level courses.

The teaching assignment will be mostly 300 and 400 level accounting classes including Intermediate II and Advanced Accounting.
