Campus Snow 2

Top 10 Things You Should Know in Case of Inclement Weather

  1. USC Upstate cares about the safety of its students, faculty and staff and will use sound judgment in making decisions as to any delays or closings.
  2. Any delay or closing will be announced by 6:00 a.m. via news outlets and University e-mail, web site, Facebook, Twitter, and main switchboard. USC Upstate makes delay/closing decisions independently of local school districts and/or other colleges. Decisions to close the campus will not be announced until determined by the Governor.
  3. The George Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business and Economics and the Burroughs Child Development Center operate on the same schedule as USC Upstate.
  4. Classes at the University Center of Greenville operate on the same schedule as USC Upstate unless UCG has a delay or closes.
  5. When an announcement is made that the university is closed, all classes with the exception of online classes are canceled.
  6. When weather brings snow or ice, one entrance to each building will be cleared. Please use the designated entrance (click here for map) ONLY to ensure your safety and the safety of others.
  7. Driving conditions will vary for each person. You are encouraged to use your own judgment as to whether it is safe for you to travel to campus. Students may find it beneficial to communicate with their professors if traveling to campus is going to be a problem. Faculty members should notify students via e-mail and/or Blackboard if they do not plan to hold classes. Staff members should communicate with their supervisors if they are not going to report to work.
  8. If you choose to drive to campus during inclement weather:
    • Allow extra driving time
    • Decrease your speed and leave yourself plenty of room to stop
    • Brake gently to avoid skidding and if your wheels start to lock up, ease off the brake
    • Be especially careful on bridges, overpasses and infrequently traveled roads, which will freeze first
    • Don't assume your vehicle can handle all conditions -- even four-wheel and front-wheel drive vehicles can encounter trouble on winter roads
  9. Attendance policies are set by each professor. If you have questions about a weather-related absence, contact your professors directly.
  10. While crews are working to make the campus safe for you, snow and ice bring hazards. Please use caution.
