Barry is a graduate of Gardner-Webb University with a major in music and a minor in drama. He became a member of the USC Upstate family in the fall of 1994. In addition to his role as Technical Director, Barry served as the major scene and lighting designer for The Shoestring Players for seven years. He now shares that responsibility with the design faculty and is the organizer and director of The Golden Shoe Awards Show. This past year Barry designed the set for Spartanburg Little Theatre’s production of Footloose and The Warehouse Theatre’s production of Plaza Suit. He also designed lighting for Lamplight and Shadow: The Life and Times of Edgar Allen Poe, A Dolls House and Plaza Suit for The Warehouse Theatre in Greenville. Barry was recently presented a meritorious design award from The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival for his design for the university production of Picnic. Barry has also worn the hats of actor and director. He has directed The Shoestring Player’s productions of The Wizard of Oz and Steel Magnolias. Last year he directed Sordid Lives, which was the first production of the new Studio Season, and he also directed this year’s production of Greater Tuna. He has also directed Oklahoma! for Limestone College, and several musicals for the Greater Shelby Community Theatre, and South Pacific for The Spartanburg Repertory Company. Barry also designed the entry archway into the stadium for the Pan American Games for the visually impaired and co-designed the entry for and lighting for The World Goal Ball Champions! Barry also designed and taught a class in WYSIWYG lighting design program. He has worked professionally as an actor with Central Piedmont Community College Summer Stock and Anderson Community Theatre. Some of his portrayals include: Riff in West Side Story, Freddi in My Fair Lady, Rolfe in The Sound of Music, and Michael in I Do! I Do!
