GoUpstate.com: ROTC cadet flying high after Washington meeting
As National Women's History Month kicked off last week, University of South Carolina Upstate senior Jacqueline Roberts found herself face-to-face with a group of movers and shakers she'd like to be part of someday.
Roberts, a pre-med major who is also enrolled in the Army ROTC program, was one of 16 female cadets nationwide selected to attend the 2009 Women in the Military Conference in Washington last week. She was South Carolina's lone representative. Read the full story at GoUpstate.com...
Iraq veteran encourages Wofford ROTC students

Speaking to about 50 ROTC students dressed in their fatigues inside Wofford College's Leonard Auditorium, an Iraq War veteran and military scholar delivered a detailed personal account of the war Thursday and thanked Wofford for "keeping the flame" of the Army training program alive.
Stressing the importance of leadership and their role in the U.S. Army training program, Capt. Marc Lindemann told the students to look around in their community and ask themselves two questions: "Is this way of life worth fighting for, and if so, who's going to fight for it?" The Southern Guards Battalion, made up of Army ROTC cadets from USC Upstate, Wofford College, Converse College, Limestone College and Spartanburg Methodist College, will host a golf tournament on Thursday, July 24 starting at 10 a.m. to raise funds for the benefit of the Battalion. All faculty, staff and alumni are invited - any players are welcome! The tournament will consist of four-man teams. Each participant will pay a $50 entrance fee, which includes 18 holes of golf, cart rental and lunch at the country club afterwards. The course is the Oak Ridge Country Club at 5451 S. Pine St. in Spartanburg. Singles are welcome to come and support the Battalion by playing, but the four-person teams will be competing for prizes which have been provided by Dick’s Sporting Goods, The Marriott, Goodyear Service Center, Golf USA and By-Pass Golf. USC Upstate Graduates Five Cadets in Spring 2008 Commencement Exercises
At the University of South Carolina Upstate's May 2008 graduation, five cadets from the Southern Guards Battalion graduated and are now commissioned in the U.S. Army as Second Lieutenants. They are Jonathan Harbin, Tamara Prioleau, Terrence Floyd, Brian Gomes, and Jason Parnell. Photos from the graduation are available here. The Battalion's remaining cadets are on training exercises throughout the summer in Ft. Lewis, Wash. (LDAC), Ft. Benning, Ga. (Airborne), and Ft. Knox, Ky. (Air Assault). FTX to Ft. Jackson
Southern Guard Battalion cadets completed helicopter training exercises in the fall of 2006. A helicopter took the cadets from Spartanburg to Ft. Jackson in Columbia. Family and civilians were invited to watch the cadets as they practiced loading the helicopter.
USC Upstate Student And Southern Guards Battalion Cadet Saves Two Lives At The Army Ten-Miler Race
The Southern Guards Battalion comprised of Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) cadets from USC Upstate, Limestone College and Wofford College competed with two teams in the ROTC Division at last week’s Army Ten-Miler race. Nine of the 11 cadets are students at USC Upstate. The teams had a very eventful trip with Cadet Robert Wiltberger, a nursing student at USC Upstate and a paramedic, saving not one but two lives along the way. Here’s the full story …
