ASIS Scholarships Awarded to Criminal Justice MajorsThe American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS) – Chapter 97 recently presented two University of South Carolina Upstate Criminal Justice majors with $500 scholarships. Adrienne Tate (GPA: 3.668) and Melissa Smith (GPA: 3.514), both seniors, were chosen by the criminal justice faculty on the basis of their academic performance as the recipients of the ASIS Scholarships this year. The scholarships were presented by Dan Collins, a 2003 USC Upstate graduate who is the director of Corporate Security for Fluor Corporation in Greenville and a member of ASIS. This is the second consecutive year that ASIS has awarded scholarships to deserving Upstate criminal justice majors. A photo from the award presentation ceremony is attached. Congratulations, Adrienne and Melissa!
Melissa Williams, sociology major, was named the fourth All Star in Achievement presented by Wachovia Bank at a February Charlotte Bobcats game. The Bobcats profiled Melissa and her accomplishments since graduation as a teacher in the Teach For America Program on the team's Web site.

Sociology majors Amanda Knowles and Randi Hunton presented papers at the Carolina Undergraduate Social Science Symposium at the University of South Carolina Aiken, April 23-24, 2009. Knowles’ paper was titled “Germans Guilty until Proven Innocent” and Hunton’s was “The Paradox of Contemporary Rap Music.” Hunton was awarded second place (out of 49 papers presented at the symposium).
Criminal Justice Majors Receive Scholarships from ASISThe American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS) – Chapter 97 recently presented two University of South Carolina Upstate students with scholarship money from funds raised in a golf tournament. The two students, Jessica L. Shelton and Kyle L. Osinga, were selected on their GPA in the criminal justice major. They each received $500.
Sociology Major Stacey Haney presented her research at the annual Popular & American Culture Associations in the South conference in Louisville, Ky. on October 9 and 10, 2008. Her paper titled “Tuning In or Tuning Out? Masculinity in Popular American Television,” explored alternative forms of masculinity as seen in several popular TV shows, including NBC’s Will & Grace, HBO’s Oz, A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila on MTV, and Showtime’s The L Word, and is part of a panel discussion on gender topics.
