Professional Spanish Interpreting in Educational Settings

About the Course

This 5.0 CEU, 50-hour Continuing Education program in Professional Spanish Interpreting in Educational Settings is designed for teachers, aides, counselors, and other educators working in K-12 schools, as well as college and adult education providers and bilingual community members who wish to develop professional interpreting skills to apply in educational settings. The program aims to help South Carolina school districts and other education providers meet the demand for professional Spanish interpreters to serve the growing communities of Spanish-speaking parents, families, and students in the state.

  • Gain an extensive introduction to the theories, practice, and ethics of interpreting in educational settings working with the English and Spanish languages.
  • Provide a credential for professional interpreters who wish to work in educational settings. There is no existing statewide or national certification program specifically for educational interpreters. Students who complete the professional interpreting program and pass the final exam will receive a certificate of completion from the University of South Carolina Upstate at the end of the course.

Who Should Enroll?

Participants in the Professional Spanish Interpreting in Educational Settings course should be fluent in both English and Spanish. Prospective students may arrange to complete the Spanish and Englishplacement exam at USC Upstate’s Spartanburg or Greenville locations and have a follow-up conversation with the course instructor to assess fluency and set up all students for success in the course.
