Dear USC Upstate Student,
On behalf of the faculty and academic staff at The University of South Carolina Upstate, I want to be among the first to welcome you as a new member of our learning community and to Spartan Nation. We are excited that you have made the decision to join the nearly 6,000 other students who will study with us this coming academic year. I am convinced that you will find our faculty, programs, staff, and the campus itself to be everything you’ve hoped for, and more, in a college experience.
This entire campus is committed to making your experience at Upstate a success. Whether you attend classes on the Spartanburg campus or at our campus in Greenville at the University Center, we are focused on providing you with the best learning experiences possible.
You will find all of our academic degree programs and majors, either in the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Education, the Mary Black School of Nursing, or the George Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business and Economics to be innovative, practical, and exceedingly well designed.
We pledge to work closely with you throughout your time here and will make certain that you are provided every opportunity to reach your true potential.
Our Academic Support Center serves as the central venue for students to locate all of the services they need to ensure their progress from the moment they enter USC Upstate through graduation and beyond. The Honors Program, with an emphasis on critical thinking and issues of global importance, offers specially designed, low-enrollment courses to honors students and selected juniors and seniors. Our Center for Undergraduate Research and Scholarship provides a multitude of undergraduate research opportunities, all of which include working alongside faculty in pure as well as applied research projects that extend our knowledge in areas as broad as Informatics, Women's Studies, Psychology, Ecology, Teacher Education, International Studies, Sciences, Educational Leadership, and many other disciplines.
Faculty members at USC Upstate bring a wealth of talent to our classrooms, studios, and laboratories each day. Many of our faculty have been recognized on the state, national, and international levels with awards for teaching, research and service. Their lively and provocative teaching, commitment to academic excellence, and innovative research that is both fundamental and applied, enrich the surrounding region and combine into a fusion of ideas and practice that makes the USC Upstate experience a truly rewarding one for all students. We are making significant differences in the lives of people, businesses, industries, institutions and governmental organizations. Upstate is an engaged, innovative, and committed University.
To complement our outstanding academic programs, the University provides several other educational resources and programs, including the University Library, International Studies and Study Abroad programs, Center for Child Advocacy Studies, service learning and internships opportunities, which provide students opportunities to engage in scholarly initiatives with faculty and staff. In the fall of 2006, USC Upstate began offering the National Competitive Scholarship Program where students can prepare to compete for Rhodes, Fulbright, Gates Cambridge, Eisenhower, Truman and other renowned national and international scholarship programs.
In addition to these programs, the University offers several important support services aimed at ensuring the success of our students: Writing Center, Opportunity Network, Career Services and two pre-college programs for admitted freshmen—Vanguard and Keystone. There are also several other support services in other divisions, including Student Affairs, Information Technology and Services, and Athletics.
We look forward to your arrival at USC Upstate. Be sure to call if you have any questions--we're here to help. Sincerely yours, Dr. Charles F. Harrington Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Professor of Business
