Center for International Studies

The Center for International Studies (CIS) was established in 1996. The Center provides enhanced international experiences for USC Upstate students and faculty members and fosters interaction between the University and the International community.

Due to the reciprocal agreements with various universities around the world, USC Upstate is able to offer students the opportunity to study or conduct internships abroad. The Center provides curricular and personal support for International students, as well as assistance with internship placement in international and American local businesses.

The following programs are available; all programs are open to the community:

English Language Learning Institute (ELLI)

ELLI is a semester or full-year intensive program of language instruction concentrating on development of productive skills (speaking and writing), receptive skills (listening and reading), and linguistic structures. ELLI is designed for internationals that have been accepted at USC Upstate and require additional instruction in the English language.

Faculty Development

In our efforts to internationalize the USC Upstate curriculum, we provide financing for full-time faculty members to pursue international connections abroad. Awards are given through an annual competition with all faculty members.

International Programs & Events

We are always seeking new avenues to explore in order to provide a rich cultural experience for our students, faculty, staff and for the community. Part of our programming includes partnering within the community to sponsor international programming such our longtime partnership with the German American Club to sponsor the International Soccer Tournament. CIS also collaborates with the Upstate International initiative, an annual March event that showcases the International community in the Upstate.

Internships and Training

Coupled with coordinating Study Abroad trips we also arrange international internships and trainings abroad.

World Languages Institute

Provides instruction in a number of world languages taught from a communicative approach. Courses are regularly offered in the fall and spring semesters and are open to community members.
