Masthead - Put A Face To It

Civility 101

Practicing civility is not difficult; it's the common courtesies that we extend daily to one another. Consider the basics of civil behavior in the list below:

  • Arrive to class on time, prepared, and ready to learn.
  • Don’t disrespect your faculty by surfing the Internet or texting during class.
  • Respect the views and opinions of others.
  • Be inclusive and accepting of others.
  • Speak kindly of others and don’t engage in verbal attacks on others either in person or on social media.
  • Offer sincere compliments to others.
  • Never use foul language in front of people if you don't know if it will bother them.
  • Exercise good table manners – chew with your mouth closed, no elbows on the table.
  • Be respectful of your roommate’s space and belongings.
  • If you do something wrong, apologize and mean it.
  • Say "please" and "thank you."
  • Do not interrupt people who are speaking with each other unless there is an emergency. They will notice you and respond when they are finished talking.
  • If you bump into somebody, immediately say "excuse me."
  • Even if an event is boring, sit through it quietly and pretend that you are interested. The performers and presenters are doing their best.
  • As you walk through a door, look to see if you can hold it open for someone else.
