Judge not, least you be judged… Many of us have heard this since we were little, yet it seems everyone judges each other based on the language they use - even if they don't mean to. Sometimes it feels like a choice - speak 'good' English and push away family and friends, or talk 'normal' and get stuck in a dead-end job. There is a win-win option - for you and anyone you know. Come learn about a program bringing dialect diversity training to SC schools & community conversation to adults around South Carolina. Tolerance of diversity is not only about race, color, religion & sexual orientation, it's about language too. Come learn more & share your thoughts! Read more…

Reel Genders International Film series presents "Pick Up the Mic"
Thursday, March 18 … 7:00 p.m. ... HEC 2039
Pick Up the Mic features more than a dozen contemporary hip-hop artists, representing a striking range of sexual and ethnic diversity. Shot over a three-year period, the film traces their intertwining relationships from San Francisco’s underground music scene of the early ‘90s through performances as recent as 2005. It was recorded in such major cities as New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, but breaks down coastal stereotypes by also covering performers in such diverse areas as Houston, Minneapolis, Madison, Wisconsin, and the Ozarks. The artists are followed rehearsing, performing, struggling, and revealing their raw, most intimate feelings about homophobia, gender identification, and performance. The screening will be followed by a spoken word performance by Rocco Kayiatos (aka ‘Katastrophe’), one of the artists featured in the film, and a Q&A with the artist.
