Milton “Chip” Smith Jr., president/owner of Blue Ridge Log Cabins, received the Small Business Person of the Year at the Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting.

Cecelia Greenberg-English was recently named superintendent of the Coalinga-Huron Joint Unified School District in Coalinga, CA. The district covers 1,100 square miles in Monterey, Fresno, and San Benito Counties. While at USC Upstate, Cecelia was president of the senior class of 1980 and editor of the yearbook.

Gina Mabe Smith has been promoted to assistant vice president and accounting manager at Carolina Alliance Bank.

C. Dan Adams, president and CEO of The Capital Corporation, was named as USC Upstate’s 2008 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year.

Shelly Smith has been married to fellow ’99 Alumni Michael Balding for almost eight years and just welcomed their second daughter, Ava Blair Balding on August 12, 2008. She joins her sister Emily Caroline Balding, 4 ½ years old.

Lamesha Smith has been employed with the Child Protective Services Division of the South Carolina Department of Social Services since November 2006.

Ashley Stewart is the production coordinator for the South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department.

Melissa Williams is teaching this year in Charlotte through the Teach for America program.  She has been nominated for the Outstanding First Year Teacher of the Year Award.
