"You want me to do something... tell me I can't do it." -Maya Angelou
Even though I have always been an athlete I never enjoyed running – AT ALL! Whether it was for basketball or softball ,I always loathed the running involved. After I graduated high school, I still remained physically active, but never pushed myself to run because I didn't have to anymore. In 2011, during my sophomore semester of college, I was challenged with the opportunity to join a half marathon group. The purpose of the group was to help motivate each other and do weekly runs as a group in order to train for the 13.2 mile run. When initially presented with the opportunity to join, the first thing that came to my mind was “I HATE running!” Ultimately I joined the group because I knew it would challenge me in a new way. Many of my challenges came in the first few weeks. The amount of time it took for my body to adjust to distance running was extremely frustrating. I couldn’t finish a single run, without walking, until the fourth week. Two aspects of the training kept me motivated. First, there was my awesome personal trainer. Second, were the people in my social circles who knew I hated running and refused to believe I had it in me to finish. In March 2012, I finished the Greer Earth Day Half Marathon in 2 hours and 40 minutes; 10 minutes faster than my goal! With the support of my personal trainer and sheer self-motivation I accomplished a feat I previously thought impossible. From then on I knew I wanted to help others feel that same way. I want to help you realize your potential and accomplish goals you have only dreamed about.
About me and expectations:
I am a very fun and positive person. I really enjoy clients who are equally positive and ready to put forward the effort, sweat and frustrations required to meet their goals. Whether your goal is running, strength training or losing weight, I am the trainer for you. I am currently majoring in Psychology and Spanish and my career goal is to be a Sports Psychologist for a Central American team. In the meantime, I plan to use my skills and experience to help others realize their own potential, and I will never give up on anyone who will not give up on themselves.

Hello, my name is Mark Hughes. I am a native of Spartanburg and a graduate of USC Upstate. My fitness journey began many years ago as a way to improve my performance as a professional sports car racer. As my racing activities declined, my passion for fitness grew. I had been competing in local bodybuilding contests since my twenties. I continue to compete every other year or so as time allows. This type of competition helps to keep me motivated and fit.
During my many years of exercise, I had trained friends and others so I became a personal trainer.
I now teach in the Personal Trainer Associates Degree program at Greenville Tech as an adjunct instructor. I also strength train senior citizens at a nearby assisted living facility. I also train private clients at their homes.
I am considered a senior (63). This age experience gives me empathy for the aches and pains involved in the aging process. I also understand the unique challenges that aging creates for exercise.
I continue to train daily, ride mountain bikes, sport motorcycles, dirt bikes, hike, snow ski, water ski and do most anything else as long as it is challenging and active.
