A Letter from the Dean
Welcome to the George Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business and Economics at the University of South Carolina Upstate, named in 2010 for George Dean Johnson, Jr.
“The George,” as we affectionately refer to the college, provides and delivers an excellent undergraduate business education to a diverse student population. Our success comes through teaching excellence, applied scholarship, business partnerships and a high degree of professional integrity and accountability.
The majority of our professors have worked in a variety of businesses and have real-world business knowledge to impart. We are one of 42 institutions worldwide with undergraduate only programs that are accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. With nearly 700 majors enrolled and more than 3,200 alumni, the atmosphere in the college and in the community is one of vibrancy and engagement.
With our move to a beautiful new building in the heart of downtown Spartanburg, our business majors and faculty are closer to the heart of business – to the businesses and entrepreneurs who are making Spartanburg and the I-85 corridor to Greenville a dynamic and thriving business hub. Our partnerships with business leaders are strong – they are frequently walking these halls, attending our many functions, or teaching at the front of our classrooms. In turn, our students are enjoying internships at local businesses, often turning summer learning experiences into job opportunities.
One partnership we’re very enthusiastic about is with Hub City Cooperative. The co-op is the first official tenant in the business incubator lab space, located on the first floor of the George. The space will allow the co-op to develop their plans for the first co-op owned grocery market in the state, while at the same time provide a lab environment for our students to see how personnel decisions are made, how fundraising is accomplished, and how to get a business up and going. We are excited to have the chairman of the co-op board, Erin Ouzts, also teach a market research course. And we look forward to seeing the rest of the incubator space fill with new start-ups.
Another development we’ve been anticipating since the building opened in 2010 is the completion of the third floor. As the fall semester progresses, you will be hearing the sounds of construction as sheetrock goes up in newly created classrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, storage and conference room areas. For the most part, the high-ceiling industrial look will remain, but there will be moveable walls and an open floor plan.
Please stop by and visit us this year and see for yourself the many exciting things happening here! We are entering a new era of greater expectations to enhance the quality of life and economic well being throughout the Upstate metropolitan region. We invite you to “virtually” visit us through the website or come in person so that we can make you a part of our growing excitement. We would particularly love to hear from our alumni!
