Expanding Excellence in the Upstate

Carolina’s Promise: Expanding Excellence in the Upstate, builds on the success of the past to assure and expand our place in the future of the Upstate of South Carolina. It will be the vital link in our continuing journey to become a leading metropolitan university in the entire southeast and the country.

Carolina’s Promise is about securing the financial resources necessary for continued growth, and using these investments from donors, alumni and friends to have a positive and transformational impact on our community and beyond.

About USC Upstate
From our humble beginnings in the Spartanburg General Hospital in 1967 to the three beautiful, vibrant campuses we enjoy today, USC Upstate's priorities have remained the same: delivering world-class education that will prepare our students to meet the challenges of the ever changing world around us.

One of the most beautiful, most high-tech campuses in the Upstate and among the fastest growing universities in South Carolina, USC Upstate is ranked the #1 “Public Regional College in the South” by U.S. News & World Report for 2013. From humble beginnings as the Spartanburg Regional Campus with 177 students on the first floor of the Spartanburg General Hospital in 1967, USC Upstate has grown to become a senior campus with 6,000 students enrolled in 40 bachelor’s and master’s programs.

Just as it did with its initial nursing program, USC Upstate continues to respond to changes in its community with high quality, affordable education – attracting students from our neighborhood and around the world.

The watchwords of USC Upstate are access, affordability and accountability:

  • access to the highest quality educational experience, programs, faculty and world-class research
  • affordability through both merit- and need-based scholarships simultaneously increasing effectiveness and efficiency
  • and accountability by contributions to its students, to the community and to the world.
