Positions listed are either tenure-track or non-tenure-track (Instructor) on a nine month basis unless specified otherwise. Candidates must have earned doctorates or other degrees as specified. ABD candidates with planned completion dates before August 15th may also be considered. Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and advising, as well as a record of scholarship and service. Instructors are hired on a nine month contractual basis subject to annual renewal. They will have responsibilities equivalent to five teaching units and must have at least a master's degree with 18 hours in the discipline and other qualifications as noted. All positions are subject to funding.

Fine Arts and Communication Studies

This is a One-Year Instructor Position Only. The Department of Fine Arts and Communication Studies at the University of South Carolina Upstate invites applications for a one year Instructor position in Communication Studies beginning August 2015. We are seeking a generalist who can contribute to the curriculum by teaching courses such as Public Speaking, Advanced Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, Ethics in Communication as well as other classes in the curriculum. They will have responsibilities equivalent to five teaching units and must have an M.A. in Communication Studies or related field and other qualifications as noted. A demonstrated commitment to student-centered learning and evidence of excellence in teaching is required.

Required:  M.A. in Communication Studies or related field. Three years teaching at the university level; A demonstrated commitment to student-centered learning and evidence of excellence in teaching.

Preferred:  M.A. in Communication Studies; Experience teaching a variety of Communication classes at the University level.

Tenure-track Assistant Professor of Graphic Design beginning August 16, 2015

Tenure-track, nine-month faculty position to teach on the Spartanburg and/or Greenville campus.

The candidate will show an awareness of critical issues facing design programs and the ability to engage in cross-disciplinary teaching and interacting with all art students in critiques and extra-curricular departmental activities. Preference will be given to candidates showing evidence of exceptional teaching, ability to engage in the theoretical and critical discourses of contemporary art in practice and pedagogy, as well as a distinct and progressive vision for curriculum development. Duties include collegial leadership and collaboration with faculty and administrators to implement the mission of the visual arts programs, assist with course scheduling, assist in the process of the recruitment, training and management of adjunct design faculty, participate in student recruitment and admissions programs, student advising and committee service. Teaching will include a variety of courses at the undergraduate level, including but not limited to: all levels of graphic design, courses that include web design, design fundamentals, and history and theory of graphic design. Fulltime faculty are expected to maintain an active research agenda and engage in service in support of the department and university.

Required: MFA in Graphic Design; ABD considered if degree will be awarded by August 15, 2015.

Preferred: Previous university teaching and experience with program and curriculum development and assessment will be given priority. Evidence of professionalism and student mentoring will be given strong consideration and candidates must possess a record of past scholarly achievement suitable to rank sought. Applicants must demonstrate a strong emphasis in concept development and problem solving with solid technical and design skills in print design, typography, web, and interactive design.

History, Political Sciences, Philosophy and American Studies

Candidates will be expected to teach Comparative Politics, as well as upper-division courses in the candidate's area of specialization. Desirable subfields include African politics, Middle East politics, Latin American politics, and Asian politics. Candidates who can teach more than one of these areas are especially desirable. Also desirable are candidates who have a teaching/research agenda related to gender and diversity issues and can teach American National Government and Research Methods. Excellence in teaching and scholarship is expected. Faculty typically teach four classes per semester.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduates in East Asian history and lower-level surveys in World History. Subfields open. Faculty typically teaches four classes per semester. Excellence in teaching and scholarship and commitment to service are expected.

In the 2013 edition of Best Colleges, US News and World Report ranked USC Upstate #1 in Public Regional Colleges-South category.

Required: Ph.D. in East Asia or in the history of an East Asian country required before 8/15/2015. ABDs will be considered, however, Ph.D. must be completed before August 15, 2015.

Preferred Qualifications: Ph. D. in East Asian History or the history of an East Asian Country. Excellence in teaching and scholarship and commitment to service are expected.

The program in Exercise and Sport Science has experienced tremendous growth in the last 5 years, spurred by the recent approval of a B.S. in Exercise and Sport Science which includes a Strength and Conditioning track. We now welcome applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning fall of 2015, with primary responsibility for teaching Exercise Physiology and overseeing laboratory activities. Other classes, including Strength and Conditioning, Sport Nutrition, Team/Individual Sports, or Motor Learning will be assigned based on candidate expertise. The appointment may include the opportunity for regular summer teaching.

Required: 1) Ph.D. in an Exercise and Sport Science or related discipline, 2) college teaching experience, or strong potential for successful teaching 3) commitment to a student centered approach, including student advising, 4) a sustainable research program that fits with our current activities and involves undergraduate students, and 5) involvement in University service and professional organizations.
