SUMMARY:Grandmothering While Black: A Twenty-First-Century Story of Love\, Coercion\, and Survival
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of Black History Month\, the Center for Women’s and Gender Studies is pleased to present a talk on the crucial and complex role of Black grandmothers in the community. Our guest speaker will be Dr. LaShawnda Pittman\, Associate Professor of Ethnic Studies and Sociology at the University of Washington\, Seattle. As part of USC Upstate’s Black History Month theme — Lift Every Voice — Dr. Pittman will discuss her research on Grandmothering While Black (U of California Press\, 2023). Details below. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLight refreshments will be available. This event is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nThis study foregrounds the voices of Black grandmothers who raise their grandchildren in skipped-generation households. This is one of the many ways Black grandmothers hold families and communities together in environments that may not support their stability. This role (grandmother head-of-household) requires a lot of loveand a lot of strategizing to fulfill the social and legal functions of motherhood without the legal rights of the role. While based on a study in Chicago\, the implications of her research will resonate with experiences in Spartanburg and the surrounding region. \n\n\n\nRead more about Grandmothering While Black (U of California Press\, 2023)\, explore Dr. Pittman’s recent research on stress reduction interventions for Black grandmother caregivers\, or explore the attached article on “Doing What’s Best for the Baby: Parental Responses and Custodial Grandmothers’ Institutional Decision-Making” (2014) for a related project about Black grandmothers who provide kinship care to grandchildren who have entered or are at risk of entering the state foster system. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFaculty may contact Dr. Johnson about bringing your classes.

SUMMARY:Women's History Month: Wicked Discussion Panel: Is Sisterhood Blooming in Oz?
DESCRIPTION:Wicked offers many opportunities to think about cultural representations of girls and women across a variety of differences. This panel of professors and students will unpack the imagery of sisterhood to discuss what is new\, old\, thrilling\, and troubling about this film. What makes it so popular? What is the symbolic meaning of defying gravity? Who is the biggest villain in the story?  Come join the conversation as we explore different ways of interpreting the meaning(s) of Wicked and its phenomenal global success since its release last November. And join in the fun by enjoying themed refreshments and competing in the costume contest (awards for Best Elphaba and Best Glinda). This event is cosponsored by the Office of Community and Student Engagement in the Division of Student Affairs. \n\n\n\nMore detailed publicity will be shared as we get closer to these dates. In addition to these CWGS events\, please watch for announcements of additional events to recognize Women’s History Month by various offices\, centers\, and programs across campus! Women’s History Month has been celebrated in the U.S. since 1987. The Center for Women’s and Gender Studies is proud to participate in this tradition. Follow us on Instagram @uscupstatecwgs. If you’d like to bring a class to any of the events or give extra credit for your students to attend one of them\, email me at johns232@uscupstate.edu.

SUMMARY:Women's History Month: Wicked Screening
DESCRIPTION:This film adaptation of the Broadway musical\, Wicked\, reveals the origin stories of Elphaba (the wicked witch of the east) and Glinda (the good witch) from The Wizard of Oz. Featuring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande\, Wicked asks questions at the heart of Women’s and Gender Studies: How and why are certain women cast as “bad” while others are cast as “good”? How does this process of dividing women into categories of good and bad function within broader social and ecological systems\, as represented in the film? Give these questions some thought while you watch this incredible movie for free! This event is cosponsored with the Office of Community and Student Engagement in the Division of Student Affairs.
