Support for Complainants

What to do if you’ve experienced sexual harassment, dating violence, domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking

The most important thing is your health and well-being. Are you in a safe place? Do you need medical care? Do you need the help of law enforcement? Do you have support from friends or family?

USC-Upstate has many resources on campus to assist you. There are also community-based and national resources that can provide you with support. Please see In Interpersonal Violence.

  • If a report is made by you or someone else, you may be contacted by the Title IX Coordinator. This outreach will usually come through email. The purpose of this is to check on you and offer support. You are not obligated to make a complaint or participate in a formal process.

  • As in the website above, the University can send notices to your faculty and help with academic concerns, address housing and/or work concerns, implement No Contact Orders, provide counseling services, and assist with other safety concerns. You can be referred to resources outside the University. The University Police Department has victim advocates who can work with you. The web page reference above provides more specific information. You can also contact the Civil Rights and Title IX Coordinator for more information.

  • Information related to your assault is private, and the University only shares information with those who have an educational interest. For example, faculty notices do NOT indicate what happened, just that you are experiencing some difficulties. We will not share information with anyone outside the institution unless you have signed a FERPA waiver to share information.

Experiencing any form of harassment or interpersonal violence creates challenges. Upstate is primarily concerned with your well-being and wants you to achieve your educational goals. Support is ALWAYS provided, regardless of decisions about engaging in a formal process.
