When Lucy Livingston graduated from Greenville Technical College with an associate of science degree, she knew she wanted to build on that momentum. Through USC Upstate’s Direct Connect program, all her credits transferred seamlessly, allowing her to move straight into the next stage of her education without repeating courses.

“By choosing Upstate, I felt like I made the most out of everything I had worked for at Greenville Tech,” she says.

Her passion for dentistry began in high school during an internship at a local orthodontics office. At USC Upstate, she pursued that interest through the Pre-Dental track. The program integrated with her biology major and ensured that every prerequisite — from physics to biochemistry — was part of her coursework. “I didn’t have to worry if I was taking the right classes,” she explains.

Along the way, supportive faculty and advisors played a key role. “When I was studying for the Dental Admissions Test, my professors were available to teach me the material and guide me through the preparation,” she says. “Dr. Shorter, the pre-health advisor, helped me become a well-rounded applicant with volunteering, shadowing, leadership, and strong academics.” Faculty also wrote recommendation letters for her top programs.

Like many transfer students, Lucy faced challenges. At times, she had to overcome the perception that a two-year degree wasn’t as strong as a traditional four-year college path. But rather than feel discouraged, she gained confidence: “I learned to trust in my own capabilities, even when I had to prove myself. That resilience has prepared me for dental school and beyond.”

Beyond academics, Lucy found a thriving community. As president of the Health Professionals Club, she connected aspiring healthcare students across campus, building friendships and professional networks that will last well past graduation. Her advice to future students? “Get as much hands-on experience as you can—through volunteering, shadowing, or internships. Those defining experiences will help you know for sure what career path you want, and Upstate offers great resources to make those opportunities possible.”
