Center for Justice & Society

Named in honor of South Carolina Chief Justice Donald W. Beatty, the University of South Carolina Upstate’s Center for Justice & Society (The Beatty Center) empowers students seeking careers in law, criminal justice, and public service. Part of the College of Arts, Humanities, & Social Sciences, The Beatty Center leverages existing legal and justice-related programs at USC Upstate to elevate students’ academic experiences. It also works with partners within the Upstate of South Carolina and the state to create opportunities for students and address local issues.

The Honorable James E. Lockemy

Former Chief Judge, South Carolina Court of Appeals
The Honorable James E. Lockemy is the retired chief judge of the South Carolina Court of Appeals and currently practices appellate law and alternative dispute resolution with Richardson Plowden. During a distinguished career spanning more than four decades, he also served as a South Carolina circuit court judge, a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives, and an adjunct professor at the University of South Carolina School of Law. He also served more than 43 years in the military, retiring as a major general in the South Carolina Military Department.  Read James Lockemy’s full biography

Marvin Chochotte is an assistant professor of African and African American Studies at Dartmouth College and a historian of the Caribbean and Latin America. William C. Hubbard is dean of the University of South Carolina Joseph F. Rice School of Law. A former president of the American Bar Association, he is also co-founder and chair of the World Justice Project, a global organization dedicated to advancing the rule of law. Professor Trina Jones

Duke University School of Law

Trina Jones is the Jerome M. Culp Distinguished Professor of Law and director of the Center on Law, Race & Policy at Duke University.
