Participants in this program complete two courses:
- Introduction to Interpreting (offered in the Spring Semester)
- Advanced Translation (offered in the Fall Semester)
Certificate in General Translation and Community Interpreting
This certificate is the compilation of the two above programs. Participants in this General Translation & Community Interpreting Certificate complete all four courses:
- Introduction to Translation (offered in the Fall Semester)
- Advanced Translation (offered in the Spring Semester)
- Introduction to Interpreting (offered in the Spring Semester)
- Advanced Translation (offered in the Fall Semester)
Students earn 5.0 CEUs with each course.
Purposes
- Gain an extensive introduction to the theories, practice, and ethics of interpreting in educational settings working with the English and Spanish languages.
- Provide a credential for professional interpreters who wish to work in educational settings. There is no existing statewide or national certification program specifically for educational interpreters. Students who complete the professional interpreting program and pass the final exam will receive a certificate of completion from the University of South Carolina Upstate at the end of the course.
Who Should Enroll?
Participants in these courses should be fluent in both English and Spanish. Prospective students may arrange to complete the Spanish and English placement exam at USC Upstate’s Spartanburg or Greenville locations and have a follow-up conversation with the course instructor to assess fluency and set up all students for success in the course.

Why study Translation and Interpreting?
Academically trained translators and interpreters are valuable assets in public services such as health and legal settings, but also in audiovisual, literature, conferences, business professions, and more. Untrained translators and interpreters can find themselves facing daunting challenges in all these different settings. This program aims to develop a qualified professional translation and interpreting workforce to improve the integration and appreciation of the Spanish language and cultures into the US system.

Maria Francisco Montesó is a Spanish Senior Instructor at USC Upstate. A certified and accredited translator and interpreter, Montesó holds a Master of Arts degree in translation and interpreting from the Universitat Jaume I in Spain. She is currently a PhD candidate in Interpreting Studies.
