It started with one class. In her freshman year at Upstate, Brittany Case took public speaking. Her professor got to know her and told Case she “was a natural” for the communication and media studies major.

The suggestion dovetailed nicely with Case’s goal to work in corporate America. She took a few business classes at Upstate, including marketing and basic finance, to complement the skills she learned in communications.

Case joined Microsoft in 2020 as an account manager and today is a senior account executive for the company focused on AI business development.

Case, who played softball for Upstate, says her experiences as a student-athlete helped make her a better candidate for future career opportunities, too.

She represented Upstate on the conference level with the student athlete advisory committee and served as athletics chair for the Student Government Association.

She credits Upstate with giving her the skills and confidence to try new things.

“Upstate continued to put me in opportunities where I could be challenged and, while I was still a student, take that risk to learn the business world,” Case says. “That was really helpful — to have the combination of in-class learning, and then also the hands-on learning through internships, and honestly, just professors investing in me.”
