Peace Bell

The Sound of Peace

Welcome to the Peace Bell

A bell is never merely an instrument of sound. Across cultures and centuries, its voice has called people to gather, to reflect, to celebrate, and to seek peace in times of uncertainty. Its message reminds us that we are connected—and that each generation shares the responsibility to shape a more hopeful world.

This Peace Bell represents the continuing legacy of community service. It was made possible through a community foundation fund established by a former Spartanburg Rotary club whose commitment to Service Above Self continues long after the club’s final meeting. As those resources grew, they were dedicated to creating this lasting symbol of peace, learning, and global citizenship within the Upstate Rotary International Peace Park.

The vision for this bell was shaped by experiences that forever changed my understanding of peace. In 1999, I had the privilege of leading a Rotary Group Study Exchange Team from Upstate South Carolina to Iwate Prefecture, Japan. During that journey, I also visited Hiroshima, where I witnessed both the unimaginable tragedy of war and the extraordinary resilience of a people who chose reconciliation over revenge, hope over despair, and peace over hatred.

The most enduring lesson I brought home was this: peace is not inherited. It is learned, lived, and passed from one generation to the next.

For more than thirty years, I served on the USC Upstate International Advisory Board, working to strengthen international understanding through education, business, and cultural exchange. Time and again, I discovered that lasting peace is never an abstract ideal. It is built through relationships, sustained by trust, and strengthened by acts of service.

Today, this bell stands on your university campus, because students and faculty have an extraordinary opportunity to shape the future. Every discovery that expands knowledge, every conversation that bridges differences, every act of kindness, and every friendship formed across cultures becomes part of the architecture of peace.

When this bell is rung, may it be more than a sound.

May it be a call to responsibility.
A call to service.
A call to understanding.
A call to hope.

As you leave this place, ask yourself:

What will I do today to make the world more peaceful than I found it?

Then let your answer become your legacy.

A bell rings only for a moment. Its echo fades. But the actions it inspires can resonate for generations.

May the sound of this bell remind every person who hears it that peace is not the responsibility of others.

It begins with us,

Forever in Peace,

Elizabeth Belenchia
