Finding a Path in the Stacks
USC Upstate English major Adrienne Fuehrer is getting a firsthand look at library science through an internship designed to help students explore the field.
Each week, Fuehrer visits the USC Upstate library to shadow a staff member and observe their daily responsibilities.
Shadowing has strengthened her communication and networking skills, helping her gain confidence and connect with librarians not only at USC Upstate but throughout the area as well. Those connections have helped her envision a future in the field.
Fuehrer originally took the internship to see if library science might interest her.
“The funny thing about that is, just in maybe two weeks I already knew that I was really, really enjoying this,” she says.
The experience has given her a career direction to pursue while also allowing her to hone her soft skills and become comfortable in professional settings.
“It’s been a fantastic, fantastic opportunity,” she says. “Not only is it in a library, which is what I wanted, it’s for class credit and it’s funded.”
