For freshman Julia Weisner, choosing elementary education as her major was more than a career decision, it was a calling shaped by family and fueled by her love for children.
Weisner, who works at an after-school program, says her passion for teaching comes from her grandmother, who spent 30 years in the classroom.
“She’s been my biggest inspiration,” Weisner said. “I’ve always admired her leadership and the way she impacted her students’ lives.”
When she’s not in class, Weisner enjoys spending time outdoors, grabbing a bite at Wade’s, coloring, or hanging out with friends. Her schedule is anything but quiet.
Alongside her studies, she serves as a student intern in the chancellor’s office, where she answers phones, files paperwork, and meets campus leaders. Earlier this year, she even shadowed the chancellor for a day, an experience that gave her a behind-the-scenes look at university leadership before she officially enrolled.
Weisner is also carving out her own space on campus by starting the Miscellaneous Fun Club, a low-commitment group designed to bring students together for theme nights, casual classes, and community-building activities.
“I just wanted a way for people to connect without pressure,” she said.
She gives advice to future first year students: “Look at all your options and think about how you will feel going there. Feel how you feel when you tour and pay attention to how students feel.”
As Weisner continues her first year, she’s already making her mark, whether in the classroom, the chancellor’s office, or through her new club. For her, college is not only about succeeding in academics but also building connections and embracing every opportunity.
