The University of South Carolina Upstate has named Dr. Renae Swanson as the new dean of its College of Education, Human Performance, and Health. Swanson, a seasoned academic leader with more than 17 years of experience in higher education, will assume the role on July 1.
Swanson joins USC Upstate from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, where she served as interim dean of the College of Education and Human Services. Throughout her career, she has been dedicated to student achievement, faculty development, and strengthening community connections.
“Dr. Swanson’s extensive experience, strategic vision, and student-centered approach make her the ideal choice to lead the College of Education, Human Performance, and Health,” said Dr. Pamela Steinke, Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at USC Upstate. “Her leadership in expanding academic offerings, strengthening accreditation processes, and encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration will be invaluable as the university continues to grow.”
Swanson holds a Ph.D. in counseling and psychology in education from the University of South Dakota and has held various leadership roles, including associate dean, department chair, and graduate program coordinator. Her expertise in accreditation, curriculum development, and securing external funding has contributed to the success of numerous academic initiatives. In addition, her background as a licensed professional counselor and clinical director provides a unique perspective on integrating mental health and wellness into education and community health programs.

Swanson’s appointment comes as USC Upstate continues to expand its programs in education, health sciences, and human performance.
