University of South Carolina Upstate Chancellor Bennie L. Harris has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), one of the nation’s leading organizations dedicated to advancing academic quality, institutional excellence and public confidence in higher education accreditation.
Harris was among eight new members elected to three-year terms on the CHEA Board of Directors during the organization’s recent board meeting. His term begins July 1, 2026.
CHEA is a national organization that represents degree-granting colleges and universities and serves as a leading advocate for academic quality through accreditation. The board is composed of higher education leaders from institutions across the country who help guide CHEA’s work and strategic priorities.
“It is an honor to join the CHEA Board of Directors and contribute to an organization that plays a critical role in promoting quality, accountability and continuous improvement in higher education,” Harris said. “As colleges and universities navigate an evolving landscape, accreditation remains essential to ensuring student success and maintaining public trust. I look forward to working alongside colleagues from across the nation to support CHEA’s mission and strengthen higher education for future generations.”
Under Harris’ leadership, USC Upstate has achieved significant milestones, including national recognition for student success, affordability and access, as well as continued growth in academic programs and community partnerships.
“CHEA benefits tremendously from the experience, insight, and leadership of our Board members,” said CHEA President Nasser H. Paydar. “As higher education continues to evolve, their expertise will help ensure CHEA remains a strong voice for quality assurance and accreditation on behalf of institutions, students, and the public.”
