Army ROTC has always been one of America’s leading sources of scholarships, making awards to thousands of the highest caliber students each year. Selection of winners is based on academic record, SAT or ACT test results, school officials’ evaluations, extracurricular activities, leadership and athletic activities, a personal interview, and a physical aptitude exam.
The Department of Military Science awards scholarships to the most outstanding applicants. In keeping with our high standards of excellence, candidates are selected for scholastic as well as extracurricular accomplishments and not on the basis of financial need. Scholarship benefits are awarded in annual amounts full tuition and fees. In addition to the awarded scholarship, each winner receives a flat rate of $1,200 annually for books and supplies, as well as, a monthly stipend, tax-free.
Winners may use their scholarships at hundreds of colleges and universities throughout the United States. USC Upstate offers scholarships and need-based financial aid in addition to an Army ROTC scholarship.
Requirements:
- Be a U.S. Citizen
- Be at least 17 years old before the scholarship is effective
- Be under 27 years old on June 30 of the year you expect to graduate and receive your commission (An age extension of up to three years may be granted to veterans who qualify)
- Be a high school graduate or have equivalent credit
- Participate in leadership, extracurricular or athletic activities
- Pursue an Army approved academic major
- Agree to accept a commission as an Officer in the Regular Army, Army National Guard, or US Army Reserve
- Meet required physical standards
- Other requirements apply depending on the type of scholarship for which you apply.

The four-year scholarship is awarded to students starting college as a freshman. The student must have a minimum 920 SAT or composite 19 ACT. In addition, he/she must have good high school grades (approximately a 3.5 or higher). For the best chance of being awarded an Army 4-year scholarship, applications should be postmarked no later than July 15 of the summer between the applicant’s junior and senior years of high school. The final deadline for 4-year scholarship applications is November 15 of the applicant’s senior year in high school.

The three-year scholarship is awarded to students who have completed one year of college. Performance in academic studies (including military science, if already enrolled in ROTC), successfully passing the Army Physical Fitness Test, a personal interview and observation by the PMS, and motivation towards an Army career are considered for selection. The requirements for the two-year scholarship are the same as the three-year scholarship, with the exception that the student is a junior having a 2.5 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale on all previous college work. (Apply during your sophomore year.)

The requirements for this scholarship are the same as for the two-year scholarship. However, this scholarship guarantees your service in the United States Army Reserve or National Guard and not in the Regular Army.

The Leadership Training Course provides an additional opportunity for students who have missed the first and second years of ROTC to compete for a two year or Guaranteed Reserve Forces scholarship.

If enlisted in the Army, you may qualify for a 4, 3, or 2-year scholarship. Green to Gold applicants, in addition to the requirements above, must complete two years of active duty prior to discharge and three months of service for every month of specialized training received. Applicants need a score of 180 or higher with a minimum of 60 points in each event on the Army Physical Fitness Test, a cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale for all previous college work, a GT score of 110 or higher, and other selection criteria as prescribed by regulation. The Professor of Military Science must also recommend you for the scholarship. SAT/ACT minimum is not required to apply for a two-year scholarship.

Nursing scholarships may be awarded from any of the above categories. Prospective Army nurses will apply for the respective Army ROTC Nursing Scholarship. Nursing cadets must meet the same requirements as other cadets. Army ROTC nursing students attend the Mary Black school of Nursing at the University of South Carolina Upstate.

Minuteman Scholarships can be either two-year GRFD scholarships or DEDNG-GRFD scholarships that cover up to four years. They guarantee that Cadets who commission as Army officers will serve in the Guard.

With SMP, you participate in both the Guard and your college’s ROTC program at the same time. During this two-year course, you’ll be paired with and mentored by a unit officer, and get paid to drill once a month with your Guard unit.

Enlisting in the National Guard soldiers are entitled to $9,500 of scholarships per year. They are also entitled to a drill check for serving just one weekend a month and two weeks in the summer! They are also entitled to Credentialing assistance for military training, GI Bill, bonuses and more!
