March 5 marked the fifth anniversary of Date with Data, a career fair connecting students with local industry representatives for internships and job opportunities.
The event is tailored for tech-focused students pursuing careers in help desk support, software and hardware development, senior application development, IT infrastructure, cloud computing and artificial intelligence. Participating majors include computer science, information management systems and business analytics.
Featured companies like AFL, Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, Milliken and more provided students deeper understanding of their current needs. Some of the head recruiters were USC Upstate alumni students representing their companies.
Caeden Sims, dual major in computer science and cybersecurity senior at USC Upstate explained, “this event is a great chance for me to network and explore new companies that I had never thought of before, like Milo’s Tea Company. I was even able to connect with Milliken as I learned about a job opportunity in live production;” which is something he works with at the school as a student worker in the Athletics Department
Thanks to Georgia McClintock, career advisor with Career Management Services, the event was created in hopes of helping students network, make connections and seek job and internship opportunities.
When asked about her accomplishments in relation to Date with Data, McClintock explained that organizing events like this for students elevates her leadership and confidence skills.
“Owning the space from being the former administrative assistant to being a professional career counselor gave the ability to take the initiative to talk to employers to connect with students,” McClintock said. “With the workshops, the one-on-one sessions with students and working on their professional development, this event shows the excitement of finding their first internship or first full-time job.”
