Note from Chancellor Harris, September 30, 2024:
Campus Closure and Event Postponements Due to Hurricane Helene
Dear USC Upstate Community,
I hope this message finds you safe and well. In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, I want to provide important updates regarding our campus operations and events. As of today, the campus does not have the power to resume operations.
Campus Closure: Effective immediately, all campus events are postponed until further notice. This decision has been made for the safety and well-being of our students, faculty, staff, and community. Please note this closure does not apply to outdoor Big South Conference events.
Event Postponements: The following events are postponed and will be rescheduled in November:
- Morgan Square Madness
- Family and Alumni Weekend
- Upstate Talent Forum
- Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike Theater Performance
We understand the significance of these events and the effort that has gone into planning them. We will work diligently to reschedule them at a time when it is safe for everyone to participate.
Classes and Campus Operations: Once the campus has power and we receive the all-clear from Duke Energy, classes will resume two days later. For now, classes are canceled through the remainder of the week and will resume Monday, October 7th, 2024. This timeline also applies to the return of employees from remote work to campus. It will be important for managers to remain flexible, as some of our colleagues may still be working through challenges presented by the storm.
Our priority is to ensure the safety and welfare of our entire campus community. Continue to monitor your USC Upstate communications for future updates. Please stay tuned for further updates and stay safe.
Sincerely,
Bennie Harris
Chancellor, USC Upstate

If the University remains open, faculty members will determine how they will manage absences. Students should monitor Blackboard for any messages from their instructors regarding their classes. Students should be aware of their professors’ policies around absences, usually stated in a syllabus, and alert faculty if they will miss class. If the university closes, classes will not meet and no absences will be recorded.
