USC Upstate, Spartanburg Community College, and Spartanburg School District 3 have officially launched a groundbreaking partnership designed to prepare high school students for careers in education. After two years of planning, the initiative, named TEACHSpartanburg, provides students with a seamless pathway from high school to becoming certified educators and help address the teacher shortage in our region.
During the signing day ceremony on March 24, district leaders, educators, and students gathered to celebrate this milestone. Dr. Bennie Harris, Chancellor of USC Upstate, praised the collaborative effort, highlighting its role in addressing the growing demand for qualified teachers.
“This program offers high school students a valuable head start in their teaching careers,” Dr. Harris said. “By combining dual enrollment courses, hands-on learning experiences, and mentorship opportunities, we are shaping the next generation of educators who will make a lasting impact on our communities.”
The initiative allows participating students to earn college credits through Spartanburg Community College while gaining classroom experience under the mentorship of experienced educators. Upon completion, students will seamlessly transition to USC Upstate to pursue their teaching degrees.
Ansley Carter, one of the five students in the first cohort, shared with us why she is excited to be part of TEACHSpartanburg, saying, “It is a very helpful program to become a teacher. I love seeing little kids learn things and get engaged.”
Dr. Michael Mikota, President of Spartanburg Community College, acknowledged the program’s role in reducing student debt and accelerating career pathways. “This partnership embodies the power of collaboration in public education. Our students are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed, all while minimizing financial burdens.”
The students, selected for their passion and dedication to the field of education, expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity. Each shared their aspirations to inspire future generations, much like the educators who impacted their own lives.
Leaders from Spartanburg School District 3, including Superintendent Dr. Julie Fowler, also emphasized the transformative nature of the program. “TEACHSpartanburg ensures that our students receive unparalleled support and guidance. They are not only pursuing their dreams but also contributing to the strength of our local educational system.”
As the first cohort embarks on their educational journey, TEACHSpartanburg stands as a model of innovation and collaboration, inspiring other districts and institutions across South Carolina to consider similar initiatives.
Congratulations to all involved in making this visionary program a reality! We can’t wait to welcome you to campus!
