The University of South Carolina Upstate Gospel Choir is making headlines in the gospel music world after being nominated for a Stellar Gospel Music Award in the Contemporary Choir of the Year category.
The nomination places the student ensemble in the company of gospel greats such as Kirk Franklin, Tye Tribbett, CeCe Winans, Marvin Sapp and Donald Lawrence—all of whom have been honored on the Stellar Awards stage.
Often considered the highest accolade in gospel music, the Stellar Awards recognize outstanding achievements across the genre. The nomination acknowledges USC Upstate’s choir for its musical excellence, national impact and dedication to contemporary gospel ministry.
“Winning would be historic—not just for our campus, but for South Carolina,” said Alphaeus Anderson, director of the USC Upstate Gospel Choir. “It would validate the heart, hustle and harmony our students bring to every stage. We don’t just sing songs—the students worship through struggle, joy and purpose.”
The nomination follows the release of the choir’s recent recording project, which reached the Top 100 on the Billboard and other gospel charts—a rare milestone for a college choir. That success made the group eligible for award consideration, and a vote by industry professionals confirmed the nomination.
Anderson said the recognition represents years of perseverance and purpose, noting that the journey to national attention has been long and deeply meaningful to both current students and alumni.
“For current students, it’s a reminder that their gifts matter,” he said. “For alumni, it’s a deeply emotional moment—they sowed into this choir long before the spotlight. This nomination is not just about music—it’s about a legacy finally being seen and celebrated.”
The nomination is also a point of pride for the university, highlighting how the arts, culture and student leadership are thriving on campus.
