The University of South Carolina Upstate celebrated the opening of the Spartan Zen Den on Thursday, a new calming space in the Rampey Building designed to support the mental well-being of students, faculty and staff.

The space, created by the university’s Counseling Services team, offers visitors a quiet place to pause, meditate, reflect and recharge. Soft lighting, comfortable seating and guided mindfulness resources are available for those seeking a moment of stillness amid academic and personal demands.

Chancellor Bennie L. Harris spoke at the dedication and emphasized the importance of promoting mental wellness on campus.

“This is not simply a lounge; it is a statement,” Harris said. “Here, our students, faculty and staff can pause, breathe, rest and recharge. Mental health and well-being are foundational to thriving at USC Upstate.”

The project was supported through a partnership with iTrust Wellness, the Carolina Center for Behavioral Health, Walt’s Waltz and a Behavioral Health Grant from the Mary Black Foundation. Harris thanked the partners for their investment in the emotional and psychological health of the campus community.

“These collaborations reflect our commitment to fostering a culture of care and openness,” Harris said. “If you ever find yourself struggling, remember: You are not alone. The Spartan Zen Den is here for you, and so is this community.”
