Opening Convocation Speaker: Dr. Russell Booker – Inspiring a New Academic Year

Dr. Russell Booker, the executive director of the Spartanburg Academic Movement, stood before the class of 2027 as the distinguished speaker for the opening convocation on Sunday, Aug. 20, setting the tone for the upcoming academic year. His remarks showed his remarkable commitment to the next generation and they mirror the core values of USC Upstate.

With a 28-year career devoted to education, including his role as the superintendent of Spartanburg County School District Seven, Booker exemplifies not only experience but also a values-driven approach. Even after his retirement has not stopped his focus on education and inspiring others.

“This is the beginning of a new day. I have been given this day to use as I will. I can waste it or use it for good. What I do today is important, because I am exchanging a day of my life for it.”

Amidst the time for the freshmen of new beginnings, Booker’s comments resonated with everyone there. Drawing from his own experiences and insights, he offered a compelling perspective on the significance of starting anew. He shared, “This is the beginning of a new day. I have been given this day to use as I will. I can waste it or use it for good. What I do today is important, because I am exchanging a day of my life for it.”

He challenged all Spartans to recognize that tomorrow eventually becomes today’s history, shaped by today’s choices. “I want it to be gain, not loss – good, not evil. Success, not failure. In order that I shall not regret the price I paid for it,” Booker said. His words prompted introspection and a renewed focus on the importance of making the most of the time we are given.

Amidst a world filled with distractions, Booker’s words gave everyone something to consider. As we navigate through the chapters of our lives, his advice encourages us to prioritize the value of time. Every moment carries significance, offering us the chance to contribute to our growth and the growth of those around us.
