USC Upstate Welcomes ‘Exceptional’ Class of 2027

The University of South Carolina Upstate has welcomed an outstanding and diverse cohort of freshmen for the Fall 2023 semester, marking the beginning of an exciting new academic journey for 700 exceptional students. This remarkable class, comprised of scholars, athletes, and leaders, is poised to leave a positive and lasting impact on campus and beyond. Hailing from nearly every county in South Carolina, as well as 23 other states and countries, these bright minds represent a vibrant tapestry of cultures, ideas, and experiences.

“We are thrilled to extend a warm welcome to this remarkable group of students,” said Donette Stewart, vice chancellor for enrollment services and director of admissions at USC Upstate. “Their ambition, dedication, and passion for learning will undoubtedly enrich the USC Upstate community and elevate the educational experience for all.”

The Class of 2027 brings with it an impressive array of achievements:

  • Diverse and Dynamic: With a staggering 66 percent female representation and 58 percent non-white students, the Class of 2027 is a true embodiment of diversity in higher education.
  • Outstanding Scholars: The incoming class boasts an average SAT score of 1030, demonstrating their commitment to academic achievement.
  • Exceptional GPA: With an average GPA of 3.97, these students have demonstrated exceptional dedication to their studies and personal growth.
  • Leading Majors: Nursing, Biology, Exercise Science, and Psychology emerge as the most popular majors, showcasing the students’ commitment to fields that contribute to societal well-being and scientific advancement.
  • Local and Global Impact: Half of the class hails from the Upstate region, strengthening the University’s bond with its local community. Additionally, students from diverse backgrounds and locations will contribute to a global perspective on campus.
  • Top-tier High Schools: Boiling Springs, Byrnes, and Dorman high schools are well-represented, indicating the exceptional talent these institutions cultivate.
  • Scholarship Recipients: The University’s commitment to making education accessible is evident through the $4.5 million in scholarships and financial aid awarded to this freshman class.
  • Promise Scholars: The Class of 2027 includes 96 Spartanburg Promise Scholars, 15 South Carolina Promise Scholars, and 83 Upstate Scholars, highlighting the University’s dedication to nurturing local talent and potential.
