USC Upstate Reports Strongest Incoming Class Since 2019

The University of South Carolina Upstate will welcome its largest incoming class since 2019 this fall, with first-time college student enrollment projected between 850 and 900.

The growth comes at a time when many institutions across the country are bracing for an “enrollment cliff” — a predicted drop in college enrollment due to demographic shifts — and follows years of recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This achievement reflects a collaborative effort by the entire university community and our partners to champion access to higher education and post-pandemic recovery,” said Donette Stewart, vice chancellor for enrollment services. “We are deeply grateful to our high school and community partners for their support in connecting with prospective students and encouraging them to choose Upstate. Our campus is ready to welcome them and provide an exceptional college experience.”

USC Upstate’s momentum is driven by several key initiatives, including the launch of new degree programs in industrial engineering and sports management, expanded athletic offerings such as competitive cheerleading, and a significant increase in recruitment events. Expanded scholarship opportunities, strong community partnerships, and a proven record of graduate success have further strengthened the university’s appeal.

The incoming first-time college class is expected to be one of the most talented and diverse in university history. Nearly 130 of these students will attend tuition-free through the Spartanburg Promise and Meeting Street Scholarship programs, which remove financial barriers for students across the region. The FTIC enrollment marks nearly a 25% increase over the 2024–25 academic year.

“Welcoming our largest class of first-time college students since 2019 is a powerful reflection of our progress and purpose,” said Dr. Bennie L. Harris, chancellor of USC Upstate. “Emerging from the challenges of the pandemic, we’ve strengthened our commitment to providing access to high-quality education that leads to meaningful careers and bright futures. Families across the region are placing their trust in Upstate, and we are honored to help our students turn possibility into promise.”

The university is also anticipating the opening of a new addition to its library in early fall 2025. The modern, collaborative space will provide an enhanced learning environment that reflects USC Upstate’s investment in student success.

Enrollment growth extends beyond first-time college students. Approximately 800 new transfer students are expected this fall, thanks to long-standing partnerships with institutions such as Greenville Technical College and Spartanburg Community College. These agreements help ensure a smooth transfer process that maximizes credits and financial aid.

“Our goal is always to support transfer students with a smooth transition—academically and financially—so they can maximize their credits and stay on track to complete their degrees,” Stewart said.

Regional partnerships, including collaborations with the Spartanburg Academic Movement and OneSpartanburg, Inc., continue to play a key role in supporting student success and aligning higher education with workforce development needs.

As USC Upstate continues to grow and strengthen its enrollment, the university remains focused on preparing graduates who meet the needs of a thriving Upstate economy while advancing educational opportunity in the region.
