Antigone by Sophocles is a timeless Greek tragedy that follows Antigone, a young woman determined to honor her dead brother despite the orders of King Creon. Defying the king’s decree and guided by her sense of moral and religious duty, Antigone chooses to bury her brother, setting off a tragic clash between individual conscience and state authority. As pride and stubbornness drive the conflict, the play explores themes of justice, loyalty, power, and the consequences of refusing to compromise.

Ever since an incident that limited B.J.’s ability to work, Harpo has been putting food on the table by watching other people’s children. After an incident at Harpo’s in-home daycare threatens her business, B.J.’s cousin, Shay, introduces them to Dwaylan – a man that can keep Harpo in business. What Dwaylan wants in return might be more than Harpo is willing to give, as the memory of the one child she couldn’t protect comes crashing back into their lives.

VOICES TO HEAR is a staged reading series here at USC Upstate that shines a light on recent works from both upcoming and established playwrights with a focus on diverse characters, themes, and cultures that may not be experienced or appreciated within the confines of the mainstream, commercial theatre.
