Educating the campus community about the available mental health resources
Mental Health focuses on addressing the behaviors, risks and preventative factors surrounding depression, anxiety, stress and suicide as well as educating the campus community about the different resources available.
The Factors Include:
- Bio-psycho-social: Chronic physical illness, hopelessness, aggressiveness, alcohol or other drug use/abuse.
- Socio-cultural and Environmental: Lack of social support, isolation or unsupported financial loss.
- Demographic: Sexual orientation, religious affiliation, race or gender.
- Individual and family-related determinants: Peer rejection, personal loss, family conflict, academic failure, excessive substance abuse or loneliness.
Did You Know?:
- 1,100 college students die from suicide each year.
- 75 percent of lifetime mental health conditions begin by age 24.
- More than 80 percent of college students feel overwhelmed by all they have to do and 45 percent feel things are hopeless.
- More than 11 percent of college students have been diagnosed or treated for anxiety in the past year and more than 10 percent report being diagnosed or treated for depression.
- 64 percent of students who are no longer in college are not attending due to a mental health related reason.
- Depression and anxiety are among the top impediments to academic performance.
- 7 percent of college students seriously considered suicide throughout the last year.
