Crime Analysis Professional Certificate

For Law Enforcement and Community Leaders

This professional certificate is designed for working law enforcement professionals and community leaders who want to support public safety and improve the effectiveness of their agencies. You’ll gain tools and strategies for collecting and analyzing data to identify crime patterns and inform policing decisions, all while continuing to work.

The five courses in this program mirror the Crime Analysis concentration within the Criminal Justice B.S. degree, combining data science with policing knowledge to address community problems. The curriculum prepares working professionals for entry-level roles as crime analysts in local, state, or federal law enforcement agencies as well as to sit for the Law Enforcement Analyst Foundational (LEAF) exam through the International Association of Crime Analysts (IACA) – more information below.

Law Enforcement Analyst Foundational Exam (LEAF) Certification Opportunity

All students will take the Law Enforcement Analyst Foundational Exam (LEAF) through the International Association of Crime Analysts (IACA) at the end of this course. Students who choose to take the exam for official certification can do so through a partnership with the IACA. The certification option costs $75 USD and includes a one-year IACA membership. Students who elect to take the exam for certification and score 80% or higher will receive a certificate and formal recognition from the IACA.

When?

Courses are taken in sequence, beginning each August, and the full program can be completed in one academic year. Each course is 7.5 weeks.

  • Tactical Crime Analysis: October – December
  • Strategic Crime Analysis: January – March
  • Advanced Topics in Crime Analysis: March – May
  • Practical Crime Analysis: May – June

Where?

All courses are delivered in a fully online asynchronous format, with access to in-person and online support from faculty instructors, library support staff, and other student services both in Spartanburg and in Greenville at the University Center of Greenville (UCG).

Breanna Haney is an Instructor of Criminal Justice in the Department of Sociology, Criminal Justice and Women’s Studies and the Director of the Upstate Crime Analysis Center, where she teaches courses in both the crime analysis concentration and the professional certificate program. She also serves as Vice President of Communication on the Executive Board of the Carolinas Crime Analysis Association. She brings applied field experience as a law enforcement analyst, having served as a Data Analytics Specialist with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, where she supported specialized units through tactical and investigative analysis. She has also held roles as an Intelligence Analyst and Background Research Specialist. She earned her Master of Science in Criminal Justice, along with graduate certificates in Geographic Information Science & Technology and Crime Analysis, from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
