Required Time Commitment
The USC Upstate Counseling Center serves as an advanced placement site for Interns. Our counseling internship requires a commitment to one year of training. The Internship runs August 15 – May 15. We do not accept part-time interns.
Requirement for Acceptance
To be considered for this internship, candidates must be graduate students in good standing in a counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy program. Candidates should have completed their practicum or equivalent and be certified as ready for internship training by the director of clinical training of their clinical program. Applications must be submitted by March 15 to be considered to begin the internship in August.

- Goals Statement – Describe your professional goals and how working with USC Upstate Counseling Services will fit in with your long-term career goals.
- Please describe your approach to ethical decision-making and provide an example.
- Describe your current theories of therapy.
- Explain what cultural competency means to you.
Training Goals and Objectives
The major goals of an internship with Counseling Services are:
- To enable interns to develop sufficient knowledge and skill in broad aspects of counseling within a university counseling center setting.
- To prepare interns to deliver professional services to clients in a manner that shows dedication to applicable ethical, professional practice and legal standards.
- To prepare interns for the practice of professional counseling in a manner consistent with the code of ethics that governs licensure (ACA, AAMFT, NBCC, NASW, State of South Carolina).
Organization of Intern Training and Supervision
Interns will be assigned clients to conduct initial assessments and follow up consultation under the constant supervision of their site supervisor and/or other qualified staff. Each intern is expected to carry a caseload of 10-12 sessions per week. Interns will be required to video/audio record every session. Interns will receive a minimum of one hour of individual weekly supervision. Interns are encouraged to attend staff meetings and weekly case consultations. The opportunity to co-facilitate therapeutic groups is also available. This is an unpaid internship experience.
Internship Orientation
During the first 3 days of the internship experience, interns with be orientated to the clinic’s policies and procedures.
Assessment of Interns Progress
In addition to any documents provided by the Intern’s program, Intern knowledge and competence will be assessed on an ongoing basis through a variety of methods, including review of video recorded therapy sessions, detailed reviews of the intern’s written progress notes as well as formal and informal feedback during supervision.
